27%u2022Do not promise to keep the matter a secret, because then intervening in it will be impossible. However, promise them that you will not do anything without consulting them first. This will maintain trust and open communication with them.%u2022Try to come up with ways to cope with bullying situations. Simple methods are the best. Bullies want the bullied student to react a specific way: to cry, to get embarrassed, to get scared, to become angry, etc. If possible, the child being bullied can be suggested to calmly ask the bully to stop and leave the scene altogether. It is difficult for the bully to continue their actions if the bullied student does not react to them and leaves. You can also practice the assertiveness needed in bullying situations, for example, by practicing how to say convincingly: %u201cThat is childish%u201d or %u201cStop bullying%u201d.%u2022Think together about whether the child could try to avoid situations in which they could easily be bullied. For example, they should not be the last student in the classroom or in the cafeteria, they should not bring money or valuable objects to school unnecessarily, or they should not be separated from other students or the recess supervisor during breaks. It is good to stay close to others, even if you do not know them. It is easier to feel safe in a group.%u2022As a result of bullying, the bullied student may become shy and withdrawn. The lessons part of the KiVa program teach ways to develop social relationships and students get to practice skills required for making friends. You can ask the teacher about the topics of the lessons, and you can also discuss them at home. Think together about different ways of making friends, being a good friend, and maintaining friendships.%u2022Parents or guardians can encourage their children to invite friends over, at first one at a time.%u2022The bullied student can be encouraged to participate in hobbies where they can meet new friends.%u2022It is worth contacting the school%u2019s anti-bullying team, or the KiVa team for KiVa schools, which investigates bullying cases. Tell them what happened and what you have done at home to support the bullied student.
