10%u201cSticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me%u201d.Individual words that have been uttered amid quarrels will gradually fade from one%u2019s memories, but verbal bullying that is repetitive and systematic will always leave a mark. The destructive force of words will affect the bullied student%u2019s self-esteem and concept of self time after time, thus forming a risk to their current and future well-being. %u201cThat%u2019s not bullying. It%u2019s just playing and a little teasing, you shouldn%u2019t be upset about that%u201d. Bullying is a cruel way to hurt another person verbally, physically, or indirectly. Bullying is far from playing. The purpose of genuine play and harmless teasing is not to hurt another person but to have fun together. Helping another person and offering support is extremely important. Well-intended comments have to be supportive in the right way. People who make comments as above might not have understood the nature of bullying or the effect it has on the bullied student. Being bullied is especially difficult for two reasons: First, bullying is not a one-time incident, but a recurring situation that can continue year after year. Second, bullying does not happen separately from the classroom%u2019s other social interactions. For the bullied student, it often means being excluded or avoided; even peers who are not bullying the student might keep their distance.
