19What happens to the bullied student %u2013 what about the bully?Bullying poses a risk to the well-being and development of both the bullied student and the bully. Children who are bullied suffer from it and are often more depressed and anxious than other children. They may be afraid to go to school, and their trust in other people is damaged. Being bullied can have long-term effects, all the way into adulthood. However, it is important to note that the majority of those who are being bullied cope well and can leave their school experiences behind without them affecting their later lives. This is especially true when they have supportive friends or adults around them.Intervening in bullying is also important for the student who is bullying. If no one intervenes in bullying, they may think that they can get away with similar situations in the future without consequences, and may begin to believe that putting others down is a good way to get attention or power in the group. At worst, such development leads to a buildup of problems later on.If a child who bullies others continues to do so:%u2022Their attitudes and beliefs about bullying and violence become more positive. They adopt a more disrespectful attitude towards others and see harming others as acceptable and even fun.%u2022They learn to use bullying as a way to manage social situations. Bullying can be rewarding: it gives them attention, a sense of power and self-confidence, and it can even bring them pleasure.%u2022On the other hand, a student who bullies may feel trapped if they are unable to change their behavior. They learn that no one can help or stop others.Follow-up studies show that children and adolescents do not necessarily %u201cgrow out%u201d of bullying on their own. Children who bully others repeatedly are at greater risk of developing aggressive and violent behavior in adulthood. If their behavior is not effectively addressed, their well-being and development can be seriously threatened.
